Armando has never actually experienced a real skid, has no idea what he’d do if he did, and has a vague, movie-informed instinct that involves turning the wheel dramatically in some direction — which is either exactly right or exactly wrong depending on a detail he’s never thought about: which wheels are actually driving his car.

In any skid, the first instinct you have to fight is braking hard — hard braking during a skid tends to lock wheels further and makes the loss of control worse, not better. Easing off the accelerator and avoiding sudden braking is the correct first move regardless of what kind of skid it is.

You turn the wheel, but the car keeps going roughly where it was already headed, because right now, physics is driving, not you.

This is the part movies never quite prepare you for, because on screen it’s all screeching tires and dramatic slow-motion. In real life, it’s quieter and stranger than that — and recognizing it fast is half the battle.

The clearest sign: you turn the steering wheel, and the car doesn’t respond the way it should. Not “responds a little slowly” — genuinely doesn’t turn as much as you’re asking it to, or the front of the car keeps sliding straight even with the wheel cranked over. The steering itself often feels oddly light or vague in your hands, almost disconnected, instead of the normal, solid resistance you’re used to feeling.
